Educate Classmates, Coworkers, and Colleagues
Jillian and I did just that today! We educated!
Today we brought Tubie Monkey with us to school. He has a feeding tube just like Jillian.
I teach 4K. This week we are talking about differences and similarities and how we care about all people. Educating about tube feeding falls directly into that! I had my my class watch Jillian's tube feeding video. Then I let them look at Tubie Monkey. I let them ask questions. By the end, those guys really got it! Little kids are so smart and loving! To them, this just is how Jillian is and they see nothing wrong with it. I sent home Feeding Tube Awareness temporary tattoos and a note explaining the tattoo to each kid. During playtime I had coloring pages out at the art center that showed a child getting tube fed.
Jillian got to show her friends her monkey. They were all excited to see a monkey with a tube like her. For them as well, the tube is just normal. It is a part of Jillian and they don't bat and eye about it.
It was a great day educating kids about tubes. Hopefully if they every come across someone again with a tube they will know that it helps the person and is not scary!

That is one thing I love about young children! They tend to not see the differences in each other and believe that everyone is the same. I wish the rest of the world could be like that!
