Jillian was going to stay with Dan today because she still had a fever of 101.4 during the night. Her temp was down to 98.9 this morning so I was hopeful that we finally made it through the worst. I walked downstairs to Dan in the kitchen. I was talking to him a little while holding Jillian. The she started to cough... Then choke... Inhale... No breath sounds for several seconds.. turn blue... Gurgle sound...Then forcefully vomit. I looked at Dan and asked if he noticed her lips during that and he said yea, they were blue. I was now worried but hopeful that this was just a one time thing and that she got out what she needed.
I left for work and as I was pulling in Dan called and said she had the same thing happen again and he thought she needed to be seen. I ran into work quick and let them know that I had to leave. I raced home because I had forgot our only car seat in my car. I got to the house and she was asleep. As I got her coat on she started to cough again. With how bad she was sounding we decided it was not a good choice to drive an hour to children's so we took off for a closer hospital.
We got there and we were the only ones in the waiting room. They got us taken back quickly. The nurse was talking about how she has a granddaughter with a tube too. She took her temp and it was normal. She put the pulse ox on and it was around 94 when she was sitting up.
The doctor then came in. He asked a few questions and looked her over. His two award winning comments were "she can't be too bad, she is not dehydrated" (no, she has a feeding tube, she does not have the choice to be dehydrated) and "babies turn blue, it's not that uncommon" (excuse me!!!!)
After he left I laid her down on the bed because she was asleep. Laying slightly elevated her pulse ox was sitting around 91. The nurse came in and took it off because they thought it must not be on right if her number was that low... Ummm no... I brought her here because she turned blue, I was amazed it was that high!
He then said she should have an X-ray. A little while later someone from X-ray came to get us. They took 2 chest X-rays. Then we headed back to the room. The ER then got crazy. Within a half hour 4 people came in by ambulance.
Eventually the doctor stuck his head in the door, he started out by saying he did not have much time to talk. He said she has pneumonia. He spoke with her doctor. That they were going to give her a shot of antibiotics and send us home and that her doctor would call us this afternoon. I went to ask questions and he said he didn't have time to talk and left. We never got to see him again.
Awhile later a different nurse came in with the shots. He wiped her thigh with an alcohol pad and then injected her with the shot. When he pulled it out it started to bleed and he had not prepared for that so he stuck an alcohol wipe on it. Ouch! She screamed. It was not fun.
I asked for a pulse ox before we left. At first it was 97 but then it stabilized between 95-96 sitting up and would go lower when she laid back. She just wanted to be held like a baby.
About 20min later the nurse came in, set the discharge papers in her diaper bag and said we were free to go. He gave us a script for a different antibiotic. I asked him if that meant we were stopping the one from Friday. He walk out and came back and said to stop the other meds.
We then left and came home. Dan headed to work and I stayed with little miss.
Her doctor called around lunch time. They said to follow up with the nurse practitioner. I asked them what to do if she turned blue again. The nurse asked some questions about our ER visit and I explained. She said that was not acceptable care. I asked her when we should start the antibiotic and she said she would go ask the dr. She came back and said the dr said to start it in the morning and if she turns blue again to not mess around with the hospitals here and go to children's.
Since the ER she has slept most of the time. She played for a short stint today and smiled but otherwise she has just wanted to be held like an infant.
I'm trying not to worry too much but the last time she had pneumonia is still fresh in my head. That was HARD for everyone.
I am really grateful for all of the people who have been amazing today. I am so grateful for each of you. You made this day less hard and I am really gratefull!
