The domino effect

How many people can be taken out by a stomach bug in a one weekend? Well the answer at my parent's house this weekend was 7! Within 36 hours 7 of us felt the effects of the stomach flu.

It started with Jillian. First she had an allergic reaction to a dog while going family pictures. Then the stomach flu kicked her butt. Between the two she ended up in the ER Saturday night because she was wheezing, I lost count of the amount of times she vomited and she had diarrhea 5 times on Saturday (like pouring out of her diaper). Around dinner time on Saturday she pooped again and this time it was bloody. I called Children's and had them page the on-call doctor. The on-call told us she wanted Jillian seen.
We took Jillian into the ER. Even with being on a feeding tube she was still dehydrated. They did a chest x-ray because with vomiting Jillian frequently aspirates. Her chest x-ray came back clean however she had only been vomiting for 24 hours and we know from past experiences that with Jillian it takes more then 24 hours after aspirating for it to show up on a chest x-ray. They gave her IV fluids, meds to make her stop vomiting, and meds for the 102.2 temp she had. Her blood work came back off in all sorts of areas but the hope is that is because she was dehydrated. Her lungs were ok while we were there however she did a neb right before we got there. We got great service at the Aurora in Kenosha.

They discharged Jillian and we went back to my parents. While we were in the ER my parents, Seth, Mikaley, Dan and Mikaley's parent's all went to the play that Mikaley wrote at Carthage. They all came back to the house for dessert. I went to bed sometime after midnight. I did not feel great when I went to bed but I figured it was because I was so sleepy! I woke up multiple times during the night not feeling great but I kept hoping and praying it would pass. My hope for it passing turned in the morning when I started to vomit. The rest of the day was LONG being sick with the stomach flu. I could not keep fluids down and had body aches all over. It has been a really long time since I had the stomach flu this bad.
Late afternoon my brother came down with it too. Around 10pm my dad brought him to the ER because he was getting too dehydrated. They gave him IV fluids. Around midnight my mom joined in the puking fun.
Today has been spent trying to become human again. I am still struggling to get re-hydrated (I started the morning by peeing Kool-aid orange) I feel exhausted today! By this afternoon I was able to keep down Cheerios and mom, Seth and I had soup for dinner.

My grandma got a lesser version of it. I am so thankful that she did not get it as bad as Seth and I. Dad did not feel great all day and did not really eat but did not get "sick." Brent went to work today however as the day went on he felt worse and worse. He came into Kenosha to pick up Jillian and I after work and he curled up in the chair. We got home and he went right to bed and is miserable but thankfully has not puked. Thankful Mikaley and her family was able to travel safely back to Colorado without getting sick!

The stomach bug has left Jillian. Now we are just dealing with the lungs. She is still doing nebs every 4hours and sounds live Vader. She is sleepy! She spent most of the day sitting. I am hoping this reaction does not kick her butt for too long! UGH! What is small things for most kids just beats her up for so long! She is kinda crabby today too which is not like her.

I was so proud of her at the ER! Even though she struggles with her speech we have still insisted that she learns manners. She has the option to say or sign what she needs or wants and knows how to sign "please," "thank you," and "more." They needed a urine sample in the ER and trying to do the bag version with Jillian rarely is successful and we almost always end up cathing her anyhow so we just started with that method this time. Jillian is a really hard person to cath because the opening likes to fuse shut. Well of course she was a really hard cath Saturday night but after they got it in and got pee out, she told them "thank you." It was the sweetest thing. All the nurses were talking about how sweet she was! I am so grateful she is so kind and respectful even when her world is hard. I am so proud to be her mom!

Right now she is curled up watching Gullah Gullah Island. She napped in the car on the way home from Bumpa and Grandma's house and then took a neb so I am giving her a little bit of time before I put her to bed or she will just sit in bed a scream and that is hard on her lungs!

Hopefully tomorrow is easier on everyone! And hopefully no one else gets this! In all of my time growing up we never had a stomach bug that hit all of us at the same time...

Jillian in the ER. This picture does not show how red her cheeks were
Jillian today. We all found a different piece of furniture and crashed on it. There was little movement today
Because if we had not cleaned up enough bodily fluid in the past few days... her extension sent broke today while I was trying to take it off of her causing stomach gunk to come pouring out. Thankful in the realm of things an extension set breaking is not a big deal.
